GCCA e-news Issue 18 January 2015

2015 marks the Year of Light. On 20th December 2014, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly 68th Session marked 2015 to be the Year of Light and Light-based Technologies. The idea behind the ‘Year of’ and marking ‘Light’ to be of international significance is a global initiative in which the UN coordinates to raise awareness of significant causes and subjects. Marking ‘Light’ means citizens of the world can recognise the importance of light and optical technologies in their lives, for their futures and the development of society.

To light up the year and contribute to the international pledge we will share stories about light and light-based technologies throughout the year.  For more information on the Year of Light please visit light2015.org.

While our landscape’s thirst was on the radar in late 2014 we can rest assure our waterfalls and waterways a following freely since the downpour we experienced almost seconds into 2015. Carrara was the hardest hit with 107mm of rain recorded, 94mm at Clagiraba and 60mm at the Hinze Dam. Let’s hope this is a good sign for 2015. Although, our thoughts are with those in Victoria and South Australia currently dealing with stricken heat waves and extreme fire conditions.

Following the theme of radars, what’s on our radar for 2015, though most importantly what is on your radar for the year – a year yet to be filled with smiling faces, planting trees and beautifying our catchments. We want to know and we want you to share via uploading your events to our e-calendar.

What’s in our scope for 2015? We will host GC Biggest Tree Planting Day, support the annual Catchment Crawl, coordinate programs on behalf of the City of Gold Coast (PlatypusWatch and Bug on creepy creeper) and in between release ‘A Connect Our Members’ strategy supported by a potential signature forum or get-together – more information to come. We will also focus on inspiring more youth to take action and connect with our members with coordinating a Landcare Leadership Retreat for students (more details to come).

As 2015 is fast unrolling please take the time to read on, make note of meeting and event dates, and share our news from across Gold Coast’s catchments.
